This is the story of a young boy brought up in a tiny village in Kerala (Calicut). He was only 15 when he left his home to pursue a career in the big city of Mumbai. With little money and dreams in his eyes, he set foot in the mega city (not so crowded in the 70s) to look for a job. For the first few months, he kept trying but to no avail. He used to stay with an aunt in their house. He was demotivated and wanted to run back to his hometown. But, something inside him told him to not give up so soon. Faith in God and self-confidence kept him going. Finally, after months of hardship, he finally got a job with a shipping company where he was in-charge of accounts and was supposed to sail for months with the crew. Despite having sea-sickness, he would discharge his duties with utmost sincerity.
Post getting the job, he moved into a bachelor's pad with some of his other friends. On certain days, the salary he earned would be too little to pay the rent as well as sustain living expenses. Hence, he would skip lunch or dinner. Sometimes, he would go to work inspite of having high fever as he didn't want to trouble anyone. Slowly, things started to change and after about a year, he was transferred to canteen services in Colaba. His hardwork & dedication got noticed by everyone by everyone, seniors as well as peers. Not only was he appreciated for his work & knowledge but also for his positive attitude and friendly nature.
He retired as a Senior Accountant with 30+ years of service and was awarded with a gold chain (which no one got in the organization). He is a contented man today with a beautiful wife and two bright children. He may not have a lot of money but has earned a lot of respect from family & friends. He still continues to take up accounting assignments though he is 76 now as he wants to keep himself busy & engaged. For his age, his energy is infectious and awe-inspiring.
The person I am referring to is none other than my father, who has sacrificed so much and ensured that we got a decent livelihood. His never say die attitude keeps him going even at this day & age. HATS OFF TO THE MAN I IDOLISE!!!!CHEERS!!!

Your father's strength is such adversity is admirable. I would be curious how he came to have faith and belief in an entity known as God from his upbringing and surroundings, but his tenacity alone was something to hold dear.

What an amazing tribute! I hope he gets the chance to read this and know how highly you think of him.

I hope my own children think of me this way some day, too.

A native from my land ... welcome to LJIdol Arundathy .... The older generation is so inspiring and such wonderful tales they have to pass on. It makes me wonder how much will have to tell our children.

Congratulations on the wonderful use of the prompt.

How wonderful!

And yes, it is amazing what we can do with persistence and sometimes a little bit of luck. The success of future generations can spring from one person's dedication and devotion.

Congratulations to your father. :)
